The Niegawa Checkpoint was set up to monitor the traffic of people and goods on the Nakasendo Highway (it is like a TSA at airport in nowdays), and played a role such as female reform and shiroki-remetry (controlling the shipment of timber that was prohibited from being felled).
Currently, the first floor and the first basement floor are open to the public as a museum, and historical materials related to the passage of the checkpoint and weapons that were always kept at the checkpoint are exhibited.
